The
first ever iSERVE event featured 75 teens from the Frederick and
Washington County parishes and schools. The event was hosted by St
Mary's in Hagerstown. The event started at 10am on Monday morning July
30th and concluded on Tuesday afternoon July 31st at 2:30. During these
two days the 75 teens were broken up into 8 teams which then went out
and served the Downtown Hagerstown community.
We were privileged to serve at
- Reach (shelter)
- the Rescue Mission (soup kitchen)
- Holly Place (nursing home for homeless elderly)
- Walnut Towers (apartments for lower income elderly)
- St Mary's Catholic Church
- the Salvation Army and
- the Hagerstown Food Distribution Center.
The teens did everything from cleaning to filing,
painting, waterproofing, cooking, sorting food, and providing
entertainment for the elderly. When the teens weren't serving they
received a great presentation on Catholic Social Justice teaching from
Brian McCrohan. They were also given free time to hang out and make new
friendships.
Our
theme was based off the following Scripture verses:
Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give
you
drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and
clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? . . .
Amen I sayto you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of
mine, you did
for me. Matthew 25:37, 40
We received donations from Giant, Safeway, Wal-Mart, and Weis to offset
food
costs for our hungry serving teens. The St Mary's chapter of the
Knights of
Columbus also provided an entire picnic lunch for our 75 teens and 20
some
adult volunteers on Tuesday afternoon at the Hagerstown City Park to
close
out the event.
We look forward to hosting this event again next year.
