Area Catholic Church and School leaders, parish members and students celebrated groundbreaking ceremonies for the new St. John's Regional Catholic School.  Prior to the groundbreaking at the site of the future school, Most. Rev. W. Francis Malooly, Auxiliary Bishop for the western Vicariate, Archdiocese of Baltimore celebrated Mass at St. John the Evangelist church in Frederick.

Members of the Frederick Catholic faith community began gathering at the future site of the new school. Hot chocolate helped take the edge off the very brisk and chilly conditions.

Judging by their happy smiles, St. John students, Mary Hessler and Maggie Ballantyne had warm moods despite the cold temperature. St. John's Regional Catholic school students were dismissed for the remainder of the day on Friday.

Jim Plamondon, Chair of the development campaign for the new school addressed the crowd and recognized various church pastors and school principals in attendance.

St. John students, representing their respective parishes, each sprinkled a cup of dirt from their home parishes onto the ground of the new school's site.

Dr. Ron Valenti, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, chatted with Joyce Connelly, Principal of St. John's Regional School.

As the ground was broken, the students happily blew noisemakers while the rest of the crowd broke into applause.
