Catholic Prison Ministry in Hagerstown

... walk along with them...

As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them... Then their eyes opened and they recognized him... Luke 24:15,31

Like the disciples on the way to Emmaus we are called to companion one another... this includes members of our Church imprisoned.

The imprisoned are people from all walks of life: fathers, brothers, sons.., our neighbors are incarcerated in the state prisons in Hagerstown. Like us, they have hopes, dreams, ambitions, and fears.

Their world is one of locked doors both metal and mental. As Catholics, we recognize and appreciate the unique gifts in each individual with whom we come in contact. The challenge to our community, our Church, and us is simple: acceptance.

Prison Ministry challenges us to walk alongside the youth, the adults and the aged who are incarcerated. We, as the Church, accompany them in their everyday experience of rejection, isolation, separation and loneliness.

We are instruments of God's unconditional love.

Volunteers are active in three state prisons in Washington County, which house approximately 7,000 men. About 9% are registered Catholic.

Volunteers have Orientation and come in monthly, weekly, or more often. Citizen participants come in once, twice, or for a Special Program. Citizen Participants work directly with the Catholic Chaplain or an experienced volunteer.
