Presenter:
Mr.
Ed Gordon
Ed Gordon has worked in catechetical
ministry for the past thirty-five years. He has served as a parish
director of religious education, youth minister and diocesan director
for religious education in the Catholic dioceses of Richmond and
Wilmington. He serves now as the Secretary for Catholic Education and
the Director of Religious Education in Wilmington.

For many years, Ed has
been a vital force in catechesis across the United States. He has served
in leadership positions with the National Conference for Catechetical
Leadership (NCCL), the National Advisory Committee on Adult Religious
Education (NACARE), the International Forum on Adult Religious Education
(IFARE), and the Committee for Education with the United States Catholic
Conference of Bishops.
Ed’s articles have
appeared in Today’s Parish, Catechetical Leader, Religion Teacher’s
Journal and on several web sites. He has presented workshops in India,
New Zealand, Thailand, Canada, and throughout the United States. In
2005, Ed received the F. Sadlier Dinger Award for Leadership in
Catechetics.

Most Rev. W. Francis Malooly
Auxiliary Bishop for the Western Vicariate
Bishop W. Francis Malooly
was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of
Baltimore on March 1, 2001. He serves as Western Vicar for the 38
parishes and six missions in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett,
Howard, and Washington counties in Maryland, and as Moderator of the
Curia and Vicar General.
Bishop Malooly has
served the Archdiocese in numerous capacities throughout his 37 years of
ordained ministry. In addition to parish assignments, he served as
Administrator at the CYO Retreat House (now Monsignor O'Dwyer Retreat
House) in Sparks, Maryland, Director of Clergy Personnel for the
Archdiocese, and Chancellor.
In April of 1999,
Bishop Malooly was awarded the President's Medal by St. Mary's Seminary
& University for his long service to the school and to the people,
priests, and bishops of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. In 2006 he
received the Cardinal Shehan Award given by the Archdiocesan Youth
Office. On May 21, 2006 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane
Letters by Mount Saint Mary's University in Emmitsburg. |

Rev. Vincent O'Malley
The Catholic Church experiences a new spirituality about
every three hundred years, led by the saints. What will be the next
spirituality? Fr. O’Malley, author of five books on the saints, presents
his vision for the future saints: their principles, personalities and
spiritualities.

Ties: Restricting Growth or Providing Lifelines
Kristen Witte
Does the way your family handles conflict
affect how you handle conflict? Do you openly communicate or are some
things “unsaid”? How do those patterns play out at home, at school, at
work? A look at principles of family systems theory and how
to strengthen relationships.

Kristin Witte
serves as the Coordinator of Pastoral Care for the Archdiocese of
Baltimore Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Kristin presently holds
three Masters degrees and is currently a
student at Catholic University of America where she is pursuing a
Doctorate in Ministry. Kristin and her husband Andrew just celebrated
their seventh wedding anniversary.

The Way Forward: Discipleship
Mr. D. Scott Miller
Discipleship is the way forward for
those who claim to be followers of the Master. Somewhere along the path,
we might have fooled ourselves into believing that the path of
discipleship does not require much. Yet, the way forward is an uphill
climb and demands that we take up the Cross. Let us be on our way!

D. Scott Miller is
the Coordinator for Adolescent Faith Formation for the Division of
Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Scott re-joined the DYYAM staff in June 2005. His responsibilities
include the areas of adolescent catechesis and confirmation.
He served on the staff of the National Federation for Catholic Youth
Ministry, Inc. from 1999 to 2005 as director of membership services.
His responsibilities included management of all aspects of the
National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministry and the New
Diocesan Directors' Institute. Other areas of responsibility
included collaboration on adolescent catechesis document and
collaboration with America's Promise, Catholic Relief Services, and
True Love Waits. Scott has a Masters of Arts in Religious Education
from Felician College in Lodi, NJ.

Connecting Kids with
Prayer
Ms. Peg McEvoy
This workshop will focus on both
foundations and fresh ideas about how we, as catechists, can help kids
connect with prayer. We will also discuss how to make adaptations for
different ages.

Peggy McEvoy has a BA in Elementary
Education from Purdue University and an MA in Pastoral Ministry from
Boston College. In her twenty years of professional lay ministry,
she has served as both a university and high school campus minister,
high school theology teacher, Confirmation coordinator and family-based
religious education coordinator. She has led groups ranging in
size from four to 400 in prayer, reflection and faith activities.

Conversion and
Christology in St. Augustine’s Confessions
Ms.
Renée Bhatia
Who do you say
that I am? St. Augustine, bishop, theologian, and Church Father, gives
a personal account of discovering who Jesus is in his autobiographical
work Confessions. This workshop will explore Augustine’s story
of conversion, and what Augustine can teach us for our own journey. You
may bring a copy of Confessions if you have it.

Renee Bhatia is a freelance writer and
speaker. She has worked in the catechetical ministry with children,
youth, and adults on both a parish and diocesan level. Renee holds a
Masters of Divinity degree from Emory University. She lives in northern
Virginia with her husband and three children.

Your Catechetical Session
Rev. Gerard Francik
Vocations is the new
not-to-be-talked-about subject. This session will help you to mention
the unmentionable. How to talk to kids and young adults about
priesthood, the consecrated life, marriage and single life. It IS
possible and you can do it.

Creating Costumes
from Everyday Things
Ms. Barbara Kyle
In this workshop you will get ideas
on how to create simple, one-size-fits –all costumes and how to
incorporate these in your lessons. Please bring: a pair of sharp
scissors to cut material and a shopping bag to carry your costume home.
Optional materials: a flat sheet (any size), pillow cases, tablecloths
(none of these needs to be brand new).

Barbara Kyle is a second grade teacher at
St. John Regional Catholic School in Frederick, Maryland. She is a
member of St. Peter's in Libertytown where she has participated in doing
sacramental and family workshops.

The Creed: Do We Understand
What We Profess?
Rev. Jim Donohue, CR
The Councils of Nicaea and
Constantinople dealt with controversies about Jesus and the Holy
Spirit. Let’s explore how these controversies shaped phrases such as
“true God from true God,” “one in being with the Father,” “eternally
begotten of the Father,” and “begotten, not made.” In addition, we
will reflect on the meaning of such phrases as “the resurrection from
the dead.”

Fr. Jim Donohue is a Resurrectionist priest
from Canada. He is the Chair of the Theology department at Mount
St. Mary's University where he has taught for thirteen years,. He is a
systematic theologian and his publications are in the area of the rites
for the sick, dying and deceased. He coaches the Mount hockey
team.

Dr. Rodica Stoicoiu
In the face of recent changes, this workshop will examine
the roots of the Vatican II
liturgical reforms and explore the role that they play in the 21st

Rodica Stoicoiu is
a graduate of The Catholic University of America and The University of
Notre Dame. A systematic theologian, her area of specialty is the
theology of the liturgy. Her current research interests include the
relation of Trinitarian theology to Order and Eucharist, especially as
these may be informed by a dialogue between the Roman Catholic and
Orthodox traditions.
Dr. Stoicoiu is
assistant professor of theology at Mount Saint Mary’s University in
Emmitsburg, Maryland and director of liturgy for Saint Agnes Church in
Shepherdstown, W.V. She is married and lives in the Maryland
countryside with her husband and a small pack of basset hounds.

master degrees in clinical social work and pastoral ministry from Boston
College. She is a bilingual psychotherapist (Spanish and English) in
private practice and at Catholic Charities where she works with
children, adolescents and adults. Her specialty is journeying with
her clients to lead happy and healthy lives utilizing a strength-based
approach and mindfulness techniques.

Catechesis and Conversion: Methods that Move Us
Ms. Renée Bhatia
A look at methods of catechesis that take
seriously the task of delighting, motivating, and moving students
towards ongoing conversion. We will consider catechesis as an oral art,
the use of rhetoric and metaphor, and other ways to bring doctrine to
life relevant to those we teach. This workshop is geared towards the
experienced catechist or leader, and is appropriate for teaching all
ages, including adults.

Mary in the Scriptures, Part 1
Dr. Robert Miller
What do the Scriptures tell us about
Mary? This session will look at what the Annunciation and Visitation
tell us about Mary's role in the mystery of salvation and the life of
the Church.

Bob Miller has a
Ph.D. in Old Testament from the University of Michigan. He has taught at
Mount St. Mary's Seminary since 1999 and is currently chair of the
department of Sacred Scripture. He is married, with four children, and
belongs to St. Anthony Shrine Parish in Emmitsburg.

The Eucharistic liturgy is an encounter with the risen
Jesus, a sacred experience that should leave us changed. We will look at
the role of new and vintage music in the liturgy, and how we can strike
a balance between the two, aiding the assembly's encounter of Jesus

"Unfinished Disciple"
Ms. Sharon Bogusz
How do new and seasoned ministers
discover the “signs” of God’s presence amid daily life? How does a
disciple appropriately speak about their personal experiences of God and
faith? This session will explore the skills every “unfinished disciple”
needs to know to connect faith and experience.

Ms. Sharon A. Bogusz is the coordinator for
Evangelization and Adult Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Before coming to Baltimore, Sharon was the Director for Catholic Faith
Formation at St. Richard Church in Pittsburgh, PA, serving as Master
Catechist for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and adjunct faculty in
Catechetics and liturgy at La Roche College in Allison Park, PA.
Sharon holds a Master of Education degree in Religious
Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and a Master of Arts
in Liturgical Studies from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN.
Sharon is presently working on a Doctor of Ministry degree in Adult
Spiritual Formation at the Catholic University of America in Washington,
DC.

Marissa Alspaugh is a
Frederick county native. She received her degree in Religious Education
from St. Vincent College. Afterward she continued her education at
Franciscan University of Steubenville where she received her masters
degree in Theology and Christian Ministry with a specialization in
Catechesis. After serving as the Steubenville Life Teen Director, she
moved back to Frederick where she has served as the youth minister at
St. Timothy Catholic Church in Walkersville for the last 2 1/2 years.
She is now the proud parent of a 6 month old son.

April began working in parish catechesis in
1991, in Syracuse, NY. She received ACC in 1998 from the Archdiocese of
Baltimore, as an ARE at St. Athanasius Church in Curtis Bay, MD. She
received her M.A. in Theology in 2002 from the Ecumenical Institute of
Theology. She is currently the Director of Adult Catechesis at St. John
the Evangelist Church in Frederick Maryland, a facilitator for the
University of Dayton VLCFF online formation and workshop presenter in
Central Maryland.
She is a member of the National Conference
for Catechetical Leadership, NCCL, where she is the Parish Catechetical
Leaders Forum Chair and is co-Chair of the Adult Faith Formation
Committee. A regular columnist in the Catechetical Leader
Magazine, April was also a contributor to the Best Practices for Adult
Faith Formation project of NCCL.
