Presenter:
Dr. Michael Gorman

Dr. Michael J. Gorman is
Dean of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary &
University in Baltimore, where he has responsibility for more than 200
students and 40 part-time faculty members from a wide variety of
religious backgrounds. He is also Professor of Sacred Scripture, holding
a joint appointment in the Ecumenical Institute and in the Seminary.
Dr. Gorman earned his
B.A. summa cum laude in French from Gordon College. He received
the M.Div. and the Ph.D. cum laude in New Testament from
Princeton Theological Seminary, where from 1981 to 1986 he was also a
teaching fellow in New Testament and then an instructor in New Testament
Greek. Dr. Gorman’s specialties are the letters, theology, and
spirituality of Paul; the gospel of John; the book of Revelation;
theological exegesis; and early Christian ethics. In addition, he has a
strong interest in the relationship between church and culture, most
especially issues of violence.
Dr. Gorman joined the Ecumenical Institute
of Theology faculty in 1991, becoming Associate Dean in 1993 and Dean in
1995. He was made a full professor in 1998. He was the 2005 recipient of
a national prize in theological education, The Fortress Press Award for
Innovative Teaching in Graduate Schools and Seminaries.
Dr. Gorman is the author
of several books and numerous articles on biblical interpretation and on
ethics. His books include Reading Paul (Cascade, 2007);
Inhabiting the Cruciform God: Kenosis, Justification, and Theosis in
Paul’s Narrative Soteriology (Eerdmans, 2008); Apostle of the
Crucified Lord: A Theological Introduction to Paul and his Letters (Eerdmans,
2004); Cruciformity: Paul’s Narrative Spirituality of the Cross (Eerdmans,
2001); Elements of Biblical Exegesis (Hendrickson, 2001; rev.
ed., 2009); Holy Abortion?: A Theological Critique of the Religious
Coalition for Reproductive Choice (with Ann Loar Brooks; Wipf and
Stock, 2003); and Abortion and the Early Church (InterVarsity/Paulist,
1982; repr., Wipf and Stock, 1998). He is also the editor of, and a
contributor to, Scripture: An Ecumenical Introduction to the Bible
(Hendrickson, 2005). In addition, Dr. Gorman is a regular contributor of
book reviews to several journals, and he sits on several editorial
councils for theological journals and publishers (Interpretation;
Bridges; Cascade, a division of Wipf and Stock).
A native of Anne
Arundel County in Maryland, Dr. Gorman lives with his wife in Odenton,
Maryland. They have three children in their twenties. Dr. Gorman, an
active layperson in the United Methodist Church, is a frequent teacher
and speaker in churches of many traditions.
