She will learn more about the letter M
today!
She will listen to stories, play,
and maybe even go to the library,
if that isn't interrupted by the prayer service.
She knows what happened
a year ago, on that day just like today.
She knows too much for a girl her age.
I know too much!
A year later,
minus the chaos,
I still feel confusion amidst the sadness.
What have I learned?
What will I teach?
What will I teach her -- and her little brother --
about the world we live in,
about war and peace,
about forgiveness and justice?
When the door opens,
and she files off the bus
with others, her age, and older,
she will be hugged
a little closer,
a little longer.
and tonight,
by her bed,
we will all pray a little longer, too.
