Holy
Week 2003
"Do this in memory of me"
As my pastor spoke the
words of institution during the Eucharistic prayer this past weekend,
I had an unusual experience. In those few seconds while he raised the host
and chalice, I raced back through four decades. I recalled the
faces, hands and voices of priests who had spoken those words throughout my
life: at the parish of my childhood in Vermont, at college, at Ottawa,
Canada when I did graduate work, at a parish in upstate New York where my
wife Laura and I lived before coming here.
I felt a deep sense of gratitude for all of
these priests who give their lives to breaking bread for us, for me. And I
felt grateful for what we celebrate every week, the powerful sharing of
Christ broken in the Word, Christ mysteriously alive in simple gifts of
bread and wine.
And this Holiest of
Weeks we remember how it all
came to be!
May you find joy and abiding peace this week
in the death and rising of Jesus, the One who Lives for Us!
