I: Certification Requirements
Catechist
formation is the
responsibility of every parish
and school in the Archdiocese.
The regulations for the
formation and certification of
catechists in the booklet Faith
Lived-Faith Shared:
Regulations for the Formation
and Certification of
Catechists (Third Edition,
1991) are very clear regarding
the expectations for
certification:
It
is expected that parish
volunteer catechists achieve
this level of certification
within the three years of
beginning their volunteer
service as catechists.
This certificate is valid for
three years, and may not be
renewed.
Catechist
Certificate: 60 clock hours
(30 beyond Preliminary
certificate)
The following persons would be expected to achieve this level of certification:
Volunteer parish catechists, catechists of adults and RCIA catechists (within 5 years of beginning their volunteer service)
Teachers in Catholic elementary schools who teach at least one religion class (within 3 years of beginning their religion teaching experience.)
Advanced
Catechist Certificate: 100
clock hours (40 beyond
Catechist level)
The following persons would be expected to achieve this level of certification:
Parish administrators of Religious Education
Religion curriculum coordinators in Catholic elementary schools
Teachers in Catholic high schools who teach at least one religion class 9within 3 years of beginning their religion teaching experience)
Principals and Assistant Principals in Catholic elementary and high schools
The following persons are expected to achieve this level of certification:
Parish Coordinators and Directors of Religious Education
Parish Coordinators of Youth Ministry responsible for adolescent catechesis
Teachers in Catholic elementary and high schools who teach only religion
Religion Department Chairpersons in Catholic high schools
Campus Ministers in Catholic high schools
It
is expected that catechists
will maintain levels of
certification and renew
catechist, advanced or
professional certification as
long as they are teaching.
