Yvette Leith Returns to Area
Ministry
by Judy Williams
Yvette Leith is the new Director of Christian Formation for grades 1-6 at St. Timothy Parish in Walkersville, replacing Barbara Miller. A native of Cumberland, Yvette was most recently serving as administrator of religious education for the parish of St. Mary’s, Cumberland. However, she is no stranger to Frederick county, having resided in the area from 1975 to 2001.
Formerly employed by National Geographic in Gaithersburg, Yvette was an active volunteer in parish ministry at her parish, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Thurmont. As a catechist for elementary grades, Yvette became well versed in religious education. In 1993 she received certification in youth ministry and was hired by the parishes, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Anthony in Emmitsburg as a part time youth minister. She also served the two parishes as secretary. In 1998 her parish responsibilities increased as she became the Administrator of Religious Education. She held the position until 2001, at which time she relocated to her native Cumberland to care for her ailing mother until her death earlier this year. While in Cumberland, she served the parish of St. Mary’s as Administrator of Religious Education.
Yvette returned to Frederick in May of this year. Upon her return she acquired two new titles – one of Director of Christian Formation for St. Timothy’s and the other of “Grandma,” as she welcomed the birth of her first grandchild, Trevor, in April.
As Director of Christian Formation for St. Timothy’s, Yvette over sees religious education for approximate 200 children in grades 1-6; the Rite of Christian Initiation for children; and preparation for the sacraments of first communion and first reconciliation. She is currently maintaining the three religious education programs implemented by her predecessor, Sandra Maxey - a Monday night program which meets throughout the school year; a 2 week intensive summer program; and a family centered program which meets monthly.
When not working or enjoying her grandson, Yvette can be spotted walking her cairn terror, Trixie. Yvette and her husband, Sam live in Thurmont and attend St. Timothy’s. They have one grown child, Amanda.
When she reflects up on the past few years, with two major moves, job changes, the loss of a parent and the birth of a grandchild, Yvette acknowledges the importance of trusting in God to see her through the trying times and into happier times...
