History

The Center was formed in 1978 as a joint project of the Central Maryland parishes and the Archdiocese. The role of the Center was to serve as a representative of what was then known as the Department of Christian Formation in Central Maryland. The Center was funded in part by the Archdiocese and part by the parishes.

In 1986 after the Archdiocese was reorganized into 12 regions the role of the Center came into question since the reorganization split the "Central Maryland Area" served by the Center between two regions. The parishes in Frederick, Washington, and Carroll counties agreed with the Archdiocese to continue the operation of the Center through June 1989, with 50% of funding coming from the parishes and 50% coming from the Department of Christian Formation (now known as the Department of Catholic Education Ministries). Two parishes which had previously been served by the Center, St. John's in Westminster and St Michael's in Poplar Springs, decided not to continue supporting the Center and therefore, to stop receiving services from it. In January, 1989, the pastors of Frederick, Washington and Carroll counties agreed to continue the funding of the Center. In July, 1989, St Michael's in Poplar Springs decided to take part in this cooperative agreement and again have services from the Center.

In 1997, the CEM Center was temporarily closed, while a search for a new Director was conducted. During that period, the location of the Center was also reconsidered. In July of 1998, the Center reopened at its current location, on the second floor of Bradley Hall (right) on the main campus of Mount St. Mary's University. This new location was central to the three counties, afforded better access to the Center itself, and provided new opportunities to network with educational resources at the University. In May of 1999, with the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Technology Initiative in full swing, the Center opened its own web site, with hopes of providing a stronger network for communication and collaboration among the region's parishes and schools.

In August 2005, the Center moved into its current facilities in the University's Pangborn Hall. Features include a dedicated library area, plus an ample conference room for meetings. For a photo tour of the Center, click here.

A Unique Approach
The Center is unique in that it provides a broad spectrum of services out of one office.
